What you can check yourself, and what needs a locksmith. 16 October 2026 · 4 min read The Albir plain runs straight down to the beach, and the terraces of its flats and houses open onto it through sliding doors. A slider is a simple machine: a heavy glazed leaf on two small rollers, running in a track, with a hook or a latch on its edge that drops into a keep on the frame. When any of those three things moves by a few millimetres, the door still closes but no longer holds. ## Check the track first Run a vacuum along the bottom track, then wipe it with a damp cloth. Sand, grit and leaves in the track lift the door at one end and drop it at the other, and the latch rides over or under its keep. On a terrace a few streets from a pebble beach, a little grit in the track is likely. Slide the door fully open and closed a few times. If it now runs smoothly and catches, that was it. ## Then look at the gap With the door closed, look at the gap between the leaf and the frame at the top and at the bottom. - **Even gap, but no catch:** the keep on the frame has probably moved. Look for a loose screw. - **Bigger gap at the top on the latch side:** the door has dropped. A roller is worn or out of adjustment. - **The door scrapes the track:** a roller has failed. Do not keep forcing it; the track wears too. ## Things to leave alone - **The adjustment screws on the rollers,** unless you can take the door’s weight while you turn them. A slider leaf is heavy, and a dropped one breaks glass. - **The multipoint gearbox inside a uPVC door.** If the handle lifts but the bolts do not throw, the gearbox needs replacing, and that means taking the handle and the lock out. - **Oil.** It collects sand. A dry PTFE spray on the latch is enough. ## When it is a locksmith’s job A worn latch, a seized gearbox, a dropped door that needs rollers adjusted or changed, or a keep that has to move: those are an afternoon’s work for a locksmith, booked ahead, with the price agreed before anything comes apart.
